In conflicts worldwide, gender-based crimes often go unaccounted for. The Gender Persecution Observatory aims to change this by consolidating and analyzing data on gender-based harms in global conflicts, raising awareness to foster justice for survivors and sustainable peace.
The Institute for Gender, Law and Transformative Peace at CUNY Law partnered with 8 Point Studio to brand and structure a platform to share the Observatory’s groundbreaking work and grow engagement.
Through strategy sessions, we clarified the mission, messaging, and goals. A clean, distinctive circular logo was created, with converging lines symbolizing the strength derived from collective witness. The circular form resembles an eye, emphasizing the act of observing and documenting crimes.
A balanced, legible typeface with sharp serifs reflects the seriousness of the Observatory’s content. A unique visual system features colored dashes reminiscent of the logo, interacting with photography to represent layered data and the resilience of survivors. Portraits convey strength over victimhood, avoiding gender-based clichés. The palette combines dark navy with vibrant accents of yellow, peach, and electric blue, creating urgency without heaviness.
A key achievement was designing an interactive digital mapping system and user-friendly website interface. This system organizes critical information from global gender justice experts, enabling visitors to explore complex data, learn about affected countries, and take action against gender-based crimes.
Our work ensures the Observatory’s mission is presented with clarity and impact, empowering its global audience to advocate for accountability and change.
“We leveraged compelling data and interactive infographics to strengthen the Observatory’s storytelling and engage their audience.”
